APA Specialist Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist

Dr. Loretta O'Sullivan Pippia

Young athletes are Australia’s future sports stars.

Your first sporting injury usually occurs in your teen/tween years. The experience you have and what you learn from your first injury and, most importantly, the recovery from that injury, influences your injury and recovery experience later in life and helps shape or ‘construct’ the adult athlete you become. Having someone on your team who truly understands your teen is critical.

Dr Loretta O’Sullivan-Pippia is an APA Specialist Sports and Exercise Physiotherapist with a sub-speciality in Adolescents in Sport. Loretta has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy and a Doctorate of Clinical Physiotherapy. Her Doctoral studies focussed on Adolescents in Sport, particularly on knee injuries such as ACL injuries, knee cap pain and Os good Schatters. Her Doctoral research was on knee cap pain in active teenage girls and she is currently part of a large multi-university research group looking at knee cap pain in teenagers. You can have the confidence your teen will receive the very best and evidenced based care with Loretta.

When your teen has high aspirations for their sport, you want to know that the team supporting them has elite sport experience. Loretta has worked with some of the world’s top athletes as well as state and national teams in Hockey, Track and Field, Swimming, Rugby Union, Tennis, netball, Rugby League, rowing and football. She shares this experience and knowledge to help your teen achieve their dreams. She understands the drive to win and to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence. She will help your teen focus on their long-term goals, whilst navigating injuries and sporting commitments along the way. But even more than that, Loretta will teach your teen really valuable skills they will use throughout their sporting career.

As a mum, Loretta understands your teen’s injury and their sporting aspirations, from a parent perspective. She has the resolve to be that calm influence for your teen and your family to guide you through the rocky journey of elite sport. Having someone in your corner, who is one step removed, but has highest qualifications and experience in sports physiotherapy is so invaluable.

In your teen’s initial consultation, Loretta will take a detailed history of their injury, discuss their training load, competitions and goals, and well as academic and social loads, before performing a thorough physical examination. From this, she will diagnose your teen’s injury and address the contributing factors, and then devise a treatment plan for your teen. Throughout your teen’s recovery, Loretta will teach you and your teen how to manage certain aspects of the injury yourselves, how to progress or regress exercises, how and when to use a training diary to monitor load and symptoms, how to prevent similar injuries again, how to make modifications to your training and how talk to your coach more effectively about your injury and training modifications…how to be that athlete that every coach wants on their team, because you are responsible, committed and a leader.
