NDIS and the Role of EPs

Movement is medicine, a common phrase that was created to encourage physical activity and assist in preventing and managing chronic illnesses and musculoskeletal injuries, particularly within the framework of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This phrase, however, carries much greater meaning. Movement is the opportunity for all of us to keep our bodies healthy, to engage with our environment, to complete activities of daily living, to participate in the workforce, and to socialise with our peers.

As exercise physiologists, this is our passion and ambition. We strive to ensure that all of our clients, of all abilities, are provided with equal opportunity to move and live the greatest life they possibly can.

The NDIS supports this passion of ours. They continue to fund our services through the NDIS, and they strongly encourage all of their participants to see an exercise physiologist.

What does an exercise physiologist do?

An exercise physiologist is a health professional that specialises in exercise. We are tertiary educated in understanding the human body and employing exercise as an intervention for various disabilities.

Our initial role as exercise physiologists is to assess your capabilities and functional capacities. We will sit down with you and have a talk about your disability, and discuss how this affects your life, with respect to your ability to complete tasks of daily living, social engagement, in the workplace, or any other matters. Following this conversation, a series of assessments will be completed to assess your physical capabilities. Finally, we will discuss with you what you want to achieve out of the sessions, and we will make a plan as to how we can achieve those outcomes.

Your sessions will be based around the findings of the initial assessment. With each session you can expect some form of cardio exercise (walking, running, or stationary bike), strength-based or functional exercises, and lots of fun. Our facilities at QSMC are state of the art, so we have plenty of space for all activities and high-quality equipment to help you.

Are you interested in seeing an exercise physiologist at QSMC?

Great! We would love to have you with us. You are welcome to call our reception team on 07 3891 2000 at any time to discuss how to start. Otherwise, you can chat with your NDIS plan manager (if you are plan-managed), and they can inform you of the process of seeing one of our team members.
